School Nurse
Thomas Mitchell Primary School has a strong commitment to the care and safety of all students. We employ a registered nurse between the hours of 9.00am - 3.30pm. The nurse's role includes administering all medications (with parent permission), attending to initial first aid when needed, providing medical advice to parents and staff, general health advice to students, providing educational programs as required and completing all necessary medical records in regard to students. The nurse can be contacted at school during the above hours.
Sun Smart Policy
Thomas Mitchell Primary School has a sun smart policy. It recognises the dangers of developing skin cancers as a result of unprotected exposure to the sun, particularly during summer. Teachers plan programs and activities to help children understand the dangers of being out in the sun unprotected, and frequently remind children to wear protective clothing.
All parents are requested to adopt the following practices:-
a) On casual dress days. Children should not wear singlet, tank or shoestring tops to school. Loose fitting shirts or T-shirts with short sleeves are a safer alternative.
b) Our school has a 'no hat, no play' policy in terms 1 & 2 (until the end of April) and term 4. Children must wear a TMPS broad brimmed or bucket hat to be able to play in the grounds. If they don't have a TMPS hat they are required to sit in the shaded areas within the courtyard during the recess and lunch times.
c) Encourage your child to wear 50+ factor sun screen when outside.
d) Thongs are not suitable school footwear. Sandals are a great alternative, but please be selective and choose ones with protection for the toes.
Traffic Safety
a) Staff Car Park
The school car park is only to be used by staff and school issued permit holders between the school day hours of 8.20am and 4.30pm. Parents who drop their children at the Before and After School Care program can use the car park before 8.20am or after 4.30pm. Children are not permitted to use the staff car park as access to their classrooms, nor play in the car park.
b) Bike Helmets
Law now states that all cyclists must wear an approved bike helmet when riding a bicycle. Naturally if children wish to ride their bikes to school a helmet must be worn correctly. It is a school rule that bikes, skateboards and scooters are not to be ridden in the school grounds during school hours.
c) School Crossing
Please ensure that your child/ren observe the school crossing rules and obey any instructions given by the crossing supervisor.
The crossings are supervised from:- 8.25 am to 9.10 am, and 3.15 pm to 4.00 pm
Parents should provide a good example to their children and use the crossings.
d) Parents are asked to observe the parking restrictions around the school perimeter.
The Pick Up and Drop Off ONLY Zone has "No Parking" signs and the road is painted. (Restrictions apply from 8.30am to 9.15am and 3.30pm to 4.00pm) "No Parking" is defined in the Road Rules as only allowing vehicles to stop for a maximum of two minutes and that the car is not left unattended. It is ok for you to get out of your car to open the door or boot for your child as long as you have left the parking area within the two minute period.
It is important to note that this area is not a "No Standing" area. No Standing means that you cannot stop your car at all. Some people sometimes confuse the two different signs. As a responsible parent, it is expected that if you intend to park and leave your car you will park elsewhere and leave this area free to be used as a flowing pick up and drop off zone.
On school days U turns are not permitted on Cunningham Drive and Thomas Mitchell Drive during the period 8.00am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.00pm.
To assist the smooth and safe flow of traffic when picking up please inform your child/ren of the parking arrangements by telling them:
1. That they need to be ready with their bag standing at one of the 2 gates (nominate one) waiting for you to arrive so that they can get into the car straight away after it has stopped.
2. That they are not supposed to be playing or wandering somewhere else while you're waiting.
3. What time you plan to be picking up your child.
Road rules exist for your safety and the safety of other road users. The most common parking and traffic offences around schools are:
- Stopping on a children's crossing
- Stopping in a No Stopping area
- Stopping at the right hand side of a vehicle already stopped at the kerb side (ie double parking)
- Drive through a children's crossing while a pedestrian is on it
- Failing to obey 'No U Turn' sign
Parking and traffic offences incur an 'on-the-spot' fine and are enforced by Council's Laws Officers and the Victoria Police.
We ask for everyone's cooperation and support for the parking and pedestrian arrangements. Let's continue working together to ensure Thomas Mitchell Primary School and our local community is a safe, secure and happy place for all.
