Welcome to Year 1 and our learning journey!

In Reading this year, we will be focusing on reading strategies, including Eagle Eye, Listening Lion, Chunky Monkey, Skippy Kangaroo, Flippy the Dolphin, and Stretchy Snake. We will also learn how to make predictions about the stories we are reading and other comprehension strategies to best understand a text. We will explore recounts during our Writing lessons, by thinking about the following question words: who, what, where, when, why and how. There will also been a strong focus on boundary punctuation, including full stops and capital letters, which will then lead into trickier forms of punctuation, including exclamation marks, question marks and commas. Students will learn how to write letters, as well as narratives, through Big Writes, Cold Writes and Creative Writing lessons. During Maths lessons, we will explore skip counting, friends of 10, patterns and hundreds charts throughout the year, as well as Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Probability topics. Students will continue to have the opportunity to use various concrete materials (Unifix cubes, mini teddies, match sticks, counters etc) to make groups and patterns. They will also be exposed to many open-ended scenarios and questions to enhance their understanding and broaden their knowledge of a topic.  

The Year 1 Integrated Studies topics, include Health, Drama, Geography, Digital Technology and History, which will be rotated throughout the year!
